2018 Summer Nature Programs at the historic Porter Schoolhouse - 6937 NY 22, Granville (East Hebron)

Beth Moser-Duquette is a nature lover with a degree from Castleton State University in the field of Natural Science, an Art Degree from The A.I. of Philadelphia and Vermont Library Certification. She will be presenting programs at the Schoolhouse beginning June 3 through mid-October from 11:00 a.m. to  3:00 p.m. She will be sharing the following:  her enthusiasm for the outdoors, odd facts of species, and Art & Science with a focus on our ecosystem. Rain or shine. We are in the process of restoring electric to this wonderful little nature center but can still provide programs, trail maps and education while we wait. All programs are no cost. Stop by the schoolhouse any time during our hours of operation to participate in her programs.

June Programs:

Sunday, June 3 – Nature Hike
Join Naturalist Beth Moser-Duquette for a meet and greet & take a hike at 12:00pm to learn about the different areas of the Preserve like lichen ledges, marshes & wetland. Trail maps available.

Sunday, June 10 – Nature Journaling
We will make a diary with words & watercolor sketches of what we have seen, heard, or encountered while enjoying the outdoors at the Preserve. There will also be a discussion on the origin of paper and how it’s made.

Sunday, June 17 – Intro. to Ornithology
We will learn how to identify birds by wing shape, beak differences, tails and talons. We’ll discuss the changes birds have made to adapt to their environment. Take a list of birds on a scavenger hunt on your hike as you search for birds in trees and flight.

Saturday, June 23 – Bird Hike - 10:00am – 12:00pm
Who’s Nesting? Birds migrate during many months of the calendar year. Before heading out on the trails, bird signs will be discussed. This will be followed by a project of nest-making using feathers and yarn.

Sunday, June 24 – Mosses & Fungi
What lives at the Preserve amongst the critters? Come be creative and make a Fairy House for your garden. There’ll be an introduction to lichens, mosses, twigs and mushrooms to open your creative imagination. Grab bark from down or dead trees and flowers. If you have an extra glue gun, please bring it with you. Please note: The craft will change if electricity is not available.
